Neve Genesys Console - Signal Flow & Reflection

During this module myself and our production team have utilised the Neve Genesys console and studio. This has been our primary base of operations and we have carried out a number of production sessions and projects working with the desk and external hardware here. During the start of the module we were instructed on it’s operation by lecturer Nick, and we have gain a fluent understanding and practical knowledge of its operation in recording, mixing and mastering workflows.

The two projects which are in this portfolio which have been done using the Neve Genesys include the production of The Stamp’s track “How we Livin” and the Sociodelic Live Lounge sessions. As well as this we have used the desk for a number of other recording sessions including vox and sax tracking, as well as this there are the mixing sessions done for “How we Livin” and Euan’s “Brilliant Mistake Machine”.

Alongside the production projects we have carried out which encompass a wide range of operation strategies and techniques, I also undertook a studio operation observation test where I exceeded expectations with my skill operating and utilising various aspects of the desk including -

-  Setting up a re-amp

-  Setting up and gain staging a microphone

-  Recording signal

-  Parallel compression

-  Monitor path routing as additional post-fader send to software processing

-  Sidechain dynamics

-  Printing a mixdown

Going through the feedback I received from Nick after the observation, I correctly patched and recorded the re-amp signal, using a suitable dynamic mic for the bass tone outputted from the amp with justification being it’s better low frequency response and higher SPL handling. I correctly gain staged the incoming signal. Utilising pitch adjustment software Melodyne I correctly adjusted a vocal track which needed tuning.

I successfully parallel compressed using the channel path and the monitor path. I did need prompting with sending signal to the PT reverb, however this hitch was due to a mismatch in IO which was adjusted and resolved using sent signal from the direct CH out. I correctly side-chained the kick to the bass using the key input and patch bay on the bass compression to trigger from the kick signal, needing prompt to insert in the DYN button on the channel. I safely monitored the printing mixdown from the AFL bus, which was routed in with a prompt which resulted in the final mixdown bouncing successfully.

Overall my time operating this desk has given me lots of practical understanding and skill with operation of a studio recording console, and I will use what I have gained from this going forward in future projects and sessions recording / mixing / mastering in more workflows such as this.
