Sociodelic Live Lounge Sessions Plan & Reflection

After undertaking a session with local artists Nzanzu & Euan for a live lounge filmed / recorded set I’ve had the idea to go forward with a number of these sessions featuring local artists, as promotional material for themselves and our production team and creative collective Sociodelic. These sessions will follow the format of a live recording session performance from the artist, utilising the Neve studio and live room equipped with film gear.

These sessions will be setup with the intention for the artist to be able to walk in, sit-down and play their passion. We will carry out preliminary setup of the studio and live room with aesthetic in mind for the camera shots, utilising high-quality microphones with a classic visual, as well as operation of the recording equipment and workflow. Recording will be done through the Neve desk into Pro-Tools, sessions will be set up by myself and Das and liaison will be done by business partner Tioma.

The sessions will be mostly acoustic sets to begin with, intermixed later with some full-band sets as we get more comfortable with the sessions workflow.

Following is a list of artists which we will be chasing up and offering the session to initially, this should hopefully get the ball rolling with word of mouth, gig A&R scouting and social media searching later to find more local and passionate artists up for the opportunity. This will be fantastic promotional material not only for the artists but also for ourselves as we pave our way as a production team.

This was a fantastic project and opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with other like minded creatives to produce a number of excellent tracks in a professional and cohesive live lounge format. For this project I had the pleasure of working alongside a great team consisting of classmate audio engineer Das, business student Tioma, film student Darris, long-time friend Dan, classmate creative Nzanzu and local talent Euan.

Collectively we ran a very successful afternoon session recording three tracks, two of Nzanzu’s : “Pot of Gold” / “Photos on Film” as well as Euan’s “Brilliant Mistake Machine”. These were done in an acoustic session format, with recording and mixing done in a professional studio setting on the brilliant state-of-the-art Neve desk, and filmed with professional video equipment which then was all brought together to create the first in what will be a series of Live Lounges by our creative collective Sociodelic.

The opportunity provided here cannot be understated, with the facility to produce this session and many more going forward we all felt a great sense of success in our initial session and we’re all very excited to go forward with this to gain more experience in the roles which we all are individually engaging in, as well as working in a creative production team. The final production of this session I feel is of a professional standard and is one of the best pieces of work I believe I myself have undertaken to take, the prospects of going forward with more of these sessions is as exciting as it is invaluable practically, and the collaborative workflow which was undertaken is one I am very proud of.

This module project has opened up a fantastic venture for us collectively, and we feel it has been done with every success which is a testament to our practical skills and knowledge as individuals.

We most certainly will be doing this again, and with every session we will gain more experience and increase not only our professionalism and skill in the roles we undertake, but also continue to grow a network of other fantastic creative individuals which we will have the pleasure of working alongside, which will only bring us more opportunities in the fields which we look to go into.
