MA - Pilot Production Project

During the initial stages of idea generation for the MA proposal, I have brought in work experience which will be conducted in tandem with the proposed research project. Figuring how best to establish a symbiotic relationship between the two so that both can inform and develop each other. As I have work experience opportunities with a record label based in Liverpool - Jacaranda Campus Label - I have formulated this research proposal around the topics of best practice for engineers and peers in audio production, and the operational structure of established record labels.

As the current landscape of the record label industry is shifting from traditional business models, understanding how best to organise personnel structure / services offered / finances and client acquisition will be significantly beneficial to both label scenarios. Additionally, outlining professional standards should not only prove beneficial for myself, improving the quality of my practice, but should also serve useful to others involved with each label.

For my proposed research, I aim to investigate these areas of professional audio production practice. These areas will directly relate to the practical work I will be undertaking throughout the year, and therefore will ensure informed production / label management and push myself towards professional industry practice. The methodology will follow a practice based structure with qualitative self assessment, with the reflection on my practice serving beneficial for my own professional development in my career going forward. Additionally, with action research methods included in the overarching methodology I will be able to strategies improvements to the existing hegemony and operation of which I am a part of.

Data collection within this research project will follow a qualitative method, itemising and assessing given standards of practice from a range of relevant sources within the target industry. Research will guide the applied practice, whilst further informing practical action related to the research, culminating in a deep understanding of professional production standards / record label operation and management. Research topics will revolve around all relevant areas related to these topics, informing and supporting my own production work and label management.
