Production Progress Presentation Write-up
For my presentation I began with covering the production of the tracks, explaining overarching concepts and themes and then delving into the audio engineering and tracking relating to some areas of each track. Following this, I then went through the first marketing materials including a timeline schedule containing the release planning information and timings for the promo campaign plans.
I then went through and explained the other marketing materials which have been produced so far including the website, EPK, photos, affiliate merch, cover and poster artwork, as well as a sitemap and quick tour of the site itself. I also detailed some of the research areas which I have investigated regarding the marketing and promotional aspects and campaigns, to demonstrate the backing behind the approach I have taken with this project. Lastly I went through the final stages which are yet to be complete, including mastering, carrying out the campaigns themselves, production of the promo CDs / digital download link QR cards, compiling the promo package and the launch event.
Regarding the marketing segmentation, I received feedback to research the age demographics of target audiences which would be relevant to the release. This will be an area to detail further as this information would be beneficial to the market research, and gives more insight alongside the genre / lister habits and region segmentations.
Another piece of feedback received was on the leveling of the lead guitar in the presentation’s showcase track, Daisychains, as Cormac said he reckons a small push in volume would benefit it’s clarity. I’ll certainly keep this in consideration and trial a few dB increases on it, possibly using automation for specific sections, whilst producing the final mixdown for mastering.
Finally the question of performance came up, with classmate Dom asking after any future prospects of performance. In response to this I explained how the current practical and creative process to music productions by our collective Sociodelic has been so far to date focused in and around the studio canvas, as performance is almost an entirely different skillset but mainly due to the approach to the productions themselves.
As we’re not a gigging band, the studio tracks produced have never been restricted to the instrumentation of a band with a set player count, and instead we use a wide range of instrumentation and layers all at any given time which would require a large band with a wide skill set and instrumentation ability. For example, the track daisychains not only has multiple rhythm guitar sections, but there is also a dual lead line with at least one other floating guitar track in the background subtly, along with instrumentation such as strings / brass / multi-synth layering, the performer count would need to be significantly higher than what we have as of right now.
The project of putting together these tracks for performance would be in of itself a big task to work, something which we certainly are interested in moving into in the future, however for now the focus is on the studio productions where we have honed our craft. Acoustic / singer songwriter versions of a handful of the tracks will be performed at the launch showcase event, however these are simplified live versions to highlight our vocalist, and not intended to be performances of the studio releases.
